Sheriff's Work Alternative Program - S.W.A.P.

Home > Departments > Corrections > S.W.A.P.

S.W.A.PThe Sheriff's Work Alternative Program (S.W.A.P.) was designed to help reduce jail overcrowding by providing the Courts with a sentencing alternative to incarceration in the County Jail. SWAP also operates a similar program in the juvenile court system. Essentially, SWAP gives judges a vehicle to sentence non-violent misdemeanants and traffic offenders to supervised manual labor in lieu of jail time. SWAP crews provide municipalities, government agencies and not-for-profit organizations with a reliable source of free manual labor. SWAP offenders perform a wide variety of work and are supervised by sworn officers. The program is operational seven days a week.

S.W.A.P. is made up of non-violent offenders charged with DUI and other misdemeanor crimes whoS.W.A.P. “swap” jail time for a community service sentence.  Under the supervision of specially trained sheriff’s deputies, the crews work throughout the county on a variety of public works projects such as cleaning parks, viaducts and streets.

Offenders sentenced to SWAP must call a SWAP office within 24 hours of leaving court. Misdemeanor and traffic cases must register in person at a SWAP office within thirty days from the court date.  Felony cases have one year from court date to register in person at a SWAP office.  Any questions call SWAP Office direct numbers: Daley Center (312) 603-2480; Maywood (708) 865-6510
