Wednesday, April 17, 2013In Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart’s ongoing efforts to be prepared for any type of disaster, the Sheriff’s Police Department took part in an active shooter drill today at Loyola University’s medical campus.

In addition to 60 members of the Cook County Sheriff’s Police, officers from the Loyola Medical Campus, Hines V.A., North Riverside, Maywood, Bellwood, Melrose Park, Forest Park, La Grange, Broadview, and Brookfield participated in the drill at the University’s Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. Members of the Broadview Fire Department also took part.

The drill simulated a gunman shooting inside a crowded medical school facility. This gave participants a chance to practice skills necessary to locate the offender, coordinate with other responding agencies, and respond to the wounded.

Today’s drill is one of the largest the Sheriff’s Office participated in, with about 600 medical campus students and staff role playing for the staged incident.
