Sunday, November 21, 2010—A benefit is set for today to support the family of a Cook County Correctional Officer who lost his 17-month battle with leukemia in September, leaving behind a wife and two young children.

“A Day For Dave” will take place from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at 115 Bourbon Street, 3359 W. 115th St. in Merionette Park. It is taking place to support the family of Dave Gonzalez, who died Sept. 3 as a result of complications from leukemia.

Gonzalez, 38, worked at the sheriff’s office for seven years. He was diagnosed with leukemia in April 2009 while working as an External Operations officer at the jail. Since that diagnosis, he endured chemotherapy, radiation and a stem cell transplant in an effort to battle the disease.

He left behind a wife, Mary, and two children, ages 5 and 2. “A Day For Dave” aims to raise money to help support them. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids. There will be music, entertainment, food and drinks provided.

In addition to today’s event, a website has been established by friends at Contributions can also be made to the group “A Day For Dave” in care of Archer Bank, 5400 W. 95th St. in Oak Lawn.
