Wednesday, October 20, 2010— A warrant sweep of parents delinquent on child support has netted forty-eight arrests of offenders who owe more than $475,000 in total, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Wednesday.

Starting October 12th, officers with the Sheriff’s Child Support Enforcement Unit went door-to-door tracking down parents with outstanding warrants for failure to pay child support.

Reginald HalfordCharlene LoveAmong those arrested, Reginald Halford, 49, of the 1800 block of S. 50th Street in Chicago, owed the highest amount of unpaid support at $41,448.55.
A Chicago woman, Charlene Love, 34, of the 2700 block of E. 83rd Street, owed $38,921.00 in back payments.

Eighteen of the 48 arrested owed more than $10,000 in support.  Two of the 48 were women.
“Many of these cases involve a single parent struggling to make ends meet and provide a decent life for their children,” said Sheriff Dart.  “The men, and women, we arrested are failing in one of the most important aspects of life – taking care of your own child.  Our Child Support Enforcement Unit is there to make sure deadbeat parents know we intend to hold them accountable for their court-ordered obligations.”
Sheriff Dart started the Child Support Enforcement Unit nearly two and a half years ago.  It consists of 12 officers who drive unmarked hybrid cars, and is funded by federal and state grants.  Over the course of its existence, the Unit has served more than 14,500 summons, and has arrested 986 people on child support warrants.

The Child Support Enforcement Unit is continuing to pursue other deadbeat parents across Cook County.  If you know of anyone wanted for unpaid child support, please call 1-800-447-4278.
