Monday, April 1, 2013A man wearing what was described as a white cowboy hat entered an apartment bedroom early Sunday morning, but fled after a woman screamed when she awoke to him standing there, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.

About 4:45 a.m. Sunday, a woman who lives in the 9000 block of Kennedy Drive in unincorporated Des Plaines woke up after hearing a noise in her bedroom. She began screaming after she saw a man standing there. Her roommate, who was sleeping in another room, awoke to her screams and immediately called 9-1-1.

The man, who likely entered the apartment through a window, left through the front door after the woman screamed.

No injuries were reported.

The man was described as white, 30-to-40-years-old, 5’10” to 6-feet tall and clean shaven. He wore a white jacket and white shoes in addition to his white hat.

A search of the area yielded no suspects.

Sheriff Dart says the women did the right thing by calling 9-1-1 quickly.
Other tips:
 Keep a charged cell phone near you in case of an emergency.
 If there is no alarm, keep an air horn to startle the invader and give you enough time to get a safe place.

Sheriff Dart also reminds the public to keep their windows and doors locked.
