Thursday, July 2, 2009 — Daniel Butler, 62, of the 300 block of Lakeland in unincorporated Palos Park was charged with possession of fireworks following a garage fire, according to the office of Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart.

Sheriff’s Police were assisting with a residential fire call and upon arrival were informed that the fire had been started by fireworks that were stored next to the garage.  Initial reports indicate the fireworks were being stored outside, against a garage wall, next to a generator, which automatically turned on, creating enough heat to ignite the fireworks.

Palos Park Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.  The Cook County Sheriff’s Police Bomb Squad also responded and removed the remaining fireworks, which included a dozen four-inch mortars and 2 three-inch mortars.

Butler is scheduled to appear in court on August 11, 2009 at the Bridgeview Courthouse.
