Monday, June 7, 2010— Four people have been arrested in connection with a counterfeit DVD and ID card ring after more than 20,000 DVDs were recovered from a Chicago apartment.

Miguel Hernandez-Landa, 33, of the 2400 block of South Springfield in Chicago is charged with four counts of unlawful use of unidentified sound of audio recordings.  Ivan Flores-Abad, 26, of the 300 block of South Park Blvd. in Streamwood has been charged with one count of unlawful use of unidentified sound of audio recordings.  The Motion Picture Association of America signed the complaints for the arrests.

Acting on a tip, an undercover sheriff’s police officer met with Hernandez-Landa on March 29th and began purchasing unauthorized movie copies from an apartment on the 2600 block of South St. Louis, which had been set up like a store, allowing customers to walk in and shop for DVDs.  During the investigation, Hernandez-Landa indicated false identification cards from Illinois and elsewhere also were available for purchase from an associate.  Over the next couple of months, the officer began making controlled buys of the fake IDs.

As a result of the fake ID buys police charged Maria Luna-Hernandez, 27, of the 2300 block of South Avers Avenue in Chicago with three counts of manufacturing, delivering and possessing counterfeit identification cards.  An accomplice, Silvia Jaracz, 47, of the 2700 block of South Ridgeland in Berwyn, was charged with one count of manufacturing, delivering and possessing counterfeit identification cards.

Bond for Miguel Hernandez-Landa and Ivan Flores-Abad has been set for $20,000.  Maria Luna-Hernandez and Silvia Jaracz remain behind bars on an ICE detainer with bond set at $10,000.

According to investigators, Berwyn and Cicero have become hot spots for fake IDs sales and arrests.
