Wednesday, October 22, 2014 — A 23-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a hit and run accident that seriously injured a bicyclist in Leyden Township, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.

At approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, a bicyclist was crossing Mannheim Road near Montana Avenue when he was struck by a black Ford Mustang that was speeding southbound on Mannheim Road, according to a Sheriff’s Police investigation. The vehicle did not stop and continued southbound on Mannheim Road.

The bicyclist, a 44-year-old man, was taken by Leyden Township Fire Department to an area hospital for treatment.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, Sheriff’s Police received information that a black Ford Mustang with body damage was parked on a street in Northlake.Emmanuel Garcia

During the course of their investigation, Sheriff’s Police identified the vehicle found in Northlake as the vehicle that struck the bicyclist and also identified the driver of that vehicle as Emmanuel Garcia, 23, of Melrose Park.

Garcia was arrested on Sunday and charged on Monday with leaving the scene of an accident causing injury and failure to report a vehicle accident involving injury.

Garcia appeared for a bond hearing on Tuesday at the Maywood Courthouse, where his bond was set at $6,000.

Sheriff Dart reminds the public that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty by the government in a court of law.
