Friday, April 02, 2010 — A Lockport woman was arrested Thursday and accused of stealing between $50,000 and $100,000 from a medical office she managed in Orland Park, according the office of Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart.

Margaret HumbrachtMargaret Humbracht, 47, of the 14800 block of Ashton Lane in Lockport, is accused of writing company checks without authorization or permission as well as making unauthorized charges on a business credit card of Surgical Specialists SC, a physicians group located at 10745 W. 165th Street in Orland Park.

The investigation, by the Sheriff’s Police Department’s Financial Crimes Unit, took approximately four weeks and was launched after accountants for the medical group uncovered irregularities in checking accounts controlled by Humbracht.  As part of the theft, Humbracht is accused of signing a physician’s name to a check she wrote for nearly $18,000 to cover her tax debts.   In addition, she is accused of using a company credit card to make unauthorized purchases on items such as furniture and clothing for her personal use.  Investigators are still working with credit card companies to determine the exact amounts taken.

Humbracht is charged with one count of felony theft and one count of forgery.  She appeared in bond court this morning at the Markham Courthouse and was released on a $20,000 personal recognizance bond.  Investigators are still gathering evidence and based on their findings additional charges may be filed.

Humbracht worked as the office manager at Surgical Specialists SC for eight years and has no prior record.  A new office manager is in place and the Surgical Specialists SC practice is functioning on its regular schedule.
