Friday, August 13, 2010— A Chicago man was arrested this week after he returned to a stolen vehicle which had run out of gas, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Friday.

Eugene EdgeworthEugene Edgeworth, 35, of the 8900 block of South Hermitage Avenue, is charged with criminal trespassing to a motor vehicle. The black 2010 Chevrolet Impala had run out of gas in the 2600 block of South California Street – in front of the criminal courts building and near the entrance to the Cook County Jail.

Around 10 a.m. Tuesday, Cook County Sheriff’s deputies noticed the vehicle abandoned in the southbound lane in front of the courthouse with its hazard lights on. When deputies checked the license plate on the vehicle, it came back as being stolen July 13 from an Alamo Rent-A-Car location in Lombard. As that information was received, Edgeworth arrived at the scene with a milk container filled with gasoline. He told the deputies he had borrowed the car from a relative and it ran out of gas.

An investigation determined the vehicle was reported stolen after Edgeworth’s relative failed to return the vehicle to Alamo on the required due date – one month ago.

A records check showed officers had been looking for Edgeworth to serve him with an unrelated Order of Protection, stemming from a domestic incident. That notice was served to Edgeworth after he was arrested and processed on the criminal charge.
