Friday, March 07, 2008 — A Maine Township man was charged Friday afternoon in connection with the suffocation death of his 5-year-old daughter, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

Elmyr Lawson, 37, of 9205 Potter Road, was charged with two counts of first degree murder in the death of his daughter Kae Cassandra Lawson, who had celebrated her 5th birthday just one month ago. The child was discovered lying unresponsive on the apartment’s living room floor when her mother returned from work about 10:20 p.m. Thursday evening. Elmyr Lawson had been babysitting his daughter that evening but was not home when his wife returned and the child was discovered.

Elmyr Lawson was located near midnight 15 miles away from his home. He was sitting behind the wheel of his car in a store parking lot at Biesterfield and Route 53 in Elk Grove Village. Local police, responding to an ISPERN message sent out statewide by Sheriff’s Police, found Lawson and he was taken into custody without incident.

On Friday morning, the Cook County Medical Examiner ruled the child’s death a homicide by suffocation.

Lawson, who has no prior criminal history, will remain in Sheriff’s Police custody pending a Saturday bond hearing in 2nd District Circuit Court in Skokie in Room 105 at 9:30 a.m.

Sheriff Dart thanked the Elk Grove Village Police and Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office for their valuable assistance in this investigation.
